We found our new home!!!

Alas, it is not a bus, but rather an RV as so many recommended.

I will share pictures as soon as possible...meaning, when I get the pictures from the camera ;-)

It is a cute, very retro, little 30 footer, complete with orange upholstery and velvet curtains.
I love it.

What I love even more is that it meets all of our requirements for safe and comfortable travel. Jeff spent about an hour and a half checking it out, inside and out, underneath, on the roof, and all around.

It's had a fair amount of work done recently and is in amazing condition, including brand new tires and a new spare.

We're so excited and going to pick it up on Wednesday and after a farewell party on Friday, we hit the road north Saturday morning! Woohoo!!!

Today we continued boxing up our things, sorting out the few keep items from the mass of donate items. At first is was dragging and overwhelming, but the more things we discussed and let go of, the more free we felt. We are leaving some things, like baby books, trinkets, tools and pictures, with friends and family and truly asking ourselves what it is we need to be happy and comfortable. I had a great conversation with a friend about it all, and she mentioned how differently people who "lose everything" in a fire report feeling about stuff once it is all behind them. I feel a renewed sense of excitement and happiness today, and hope to post more about this process of letting go...when I'm awake enough to actually type with my eyes open.

Every day you'll see the dust... as I drive my baby in my Magic Bus...Too much! Magic bus!

P.S. In order for us to contact you, you have to leave your contact information in your comment or send it in an email ;-)
Oh, and if anyone wants to throw some good road atlases, camping gear, or a digital SLR camera (ha!) our way we won't turn it down ;-p

xoxo

You are an inspiration. Our family is undergoing some major down-sizing as we prepare to move from the large-ish house we've lived in for fifteen years to a much smaller space at the Gainesville Catholic Worker House. Your positive attitude is helping us too.

Congrats, y'all!

There are only two types of RVs:
1) those that leak and
2) those that will.

That said, make sure to seal your roof every single year and inspect fairly often (quarterly? monthly?). If you catch the occasional leak fairly quickly, it isn't a major issue... just don't let it go.

We sold our small house and bought an old Silver Streak trailer. (We had previously lived in an Airstream for 8 years so this is not new to us.) We are living on 2.5 acres in the woods, so we do not travel with ours. The things I can tell you are:

-Condensation tends to be a major problem. Propane heat and cooking puts a certain amount of water into the air. I've got no fix for this other than to be careful of where you put books and clothes.

-If you are travelling where it is cold, I'd recommend you come up with some sort of foam covering for the windows. It helps us a lot. We've got those louvered windows and they seem to leak air no matter how much you tighten them.

-If you have 12 volt lights, get some of the flourescent lights from sundance solar. They're not cheap but we're two years onto our first bulb. The light quality is great and they don't suck a lot of power.

-Everyone will need to learn how to stay out of the way. In a small space, sometimes you just have to find a place to sit while someone else is working. We have three dogs and three inside cats. It can get interesting at times. I've met folks with children travelling and the kids tend to be extremely well behaved. I think the small space has something to do with it.

-when you live in a small space, you want to learn to spend as much time outside as you can. Have you thought about maybe getting a small tent that could be used as an outdoor room? We added a small porch to the trailer and it has made a big difference in comfort.

-RVs really are not designed well for full-timing. Over time, the floor tends to break down and the furniture also starts to go. It's just the way it is. We had some problems with that even in the Airstream, which was really well designed.

We did travel some when we had the Airstream, so drop me a line if there's anything I can be of help with. My website is at notsothoreau.com.

I can vouch for your comments about loosing it all in the fire. We lost all of our stuff. We also lost our precious dog Annie. We bought new stuff - we can never replace the Annie. We have been clutter free ever since.

I don't normally post on blogs. However, I came across yours & find you to be inspiring & beautiful (inside & out). Thank you for such a remarkable post. Keep up the greatness!
