Staunching the GoodFlow

Earlier this afternoon, I paid a visit to Monkeywrench, and one of the collective members told me that The Man has shut down Goodflow Juice Co. The gossip is that some federal agency gave the company a deadline for pasteurizing its juice, and it was unable to shift production to a new facility before the deadline. I have not been able to find any corroboration about this from mainstream media sources, which is a bit disappointing, since it’s a local business loved by many Austinites. The plus side for me, however, was that Monkeywrench was the beneficiary of a large lot of unsalable juice, and I was treated to a delicious ginger lemonade.

I hope the Chronicle or The Austin Real-Estatesman will get on this story and sort it all out.

Can someone please explain this to me?

Can someone please explain to me why our government seems to think that we should only be allowed to consume dead food?

Could this have something to do with corporate feed lots contaminating our groundwater? Could this have something to do with salmonella and e. coli in our tomatoes, spinach, strawberries and jalapenos?
It could, but until they begin pasteurizing my oranges, I am going to juice my own damn fruit. As long as they continue to pasteurize my almonds and allow companies and the almond board to lie to me claiming that they are raw I'm going to grow my own, Baby, and until then I will abstain. Not a cent of mine will go to supporting the nutritional murder of my food supply.

Damn the man!

All I'm saying is...no matter what, we are making a choice. What choice are you making?

Almonds are pastuerized?
Holy crap! I had no idea.

No kidding...especially since they continue to label them as "Raw"

When I questioned Whole Foods about how they could label their almonds raw when all almonds (by decision of the Almond Board) are either pasteurized or irradiated, they told me that they did because the FDA told them that they could. They said that it wasn't their fault that they could not carry raw almonds any longer and the FDA was protecting their business and they felt that they were doing the right thing by selling pasteurized almonds rather than irradiated almonds so....

Infuriating.

I agree, it's all crap.
What do you think you are gonna do?
Anyway I can help? I've explained to how I feel about this already.

I'm beginning by writing the Austin American Statesman and the Austin Chronicle in regards to the GoodFlow Juice company.

Regarding the FDA...honestly, I'm so overwhelmed. I sign more petitions and write more letters each week than the last. I guess what it comes down to is fighting the good fight, doing everything that I know to do and being able to set example for my children and in the end to tell them - honestly - that I did everything that I could.

Did you know that website owners are beginning to receive cease and desist letters for linking herbal treatments with cancer. Companies focusing on herbal treatments for cancer are being shut down.

The biggest thing that I am doing though, I think, is continuing to believe in my right to clean food, clean water and the freedom to say no to Big Business pharmaceuticals.

Hi,
Thanks for the info about almonds... I had no idea!!!
I eat them every day. One of the things Edgar Cayce mentioned was to eat a few almonds daily to stay cancer free. Now I will be buying them in the shell... and spreading the word about the pasteurization. Really sad. I had some bottled carrot juice the other day, and wondered why I did not feel the energy I usually get from juicing carrots... and yes... there was that word... pasteurized on the bottle. I will not buy it again.
BTW... I love your blog... You guys are the best!!! What a great adventure!

times article I thought you might think was funny. I think these corporations are sort of missing the point of the draw of small. Aren't they just describing convenience stores here? Small within the cookie cutter landscape I guess...thanks

The story about Goodflow was on the Austin news last night, though the channel I was watching did a really crappy job of covering it. The reporter was smirking, like it was meant to be a funny story.
You can find their coverage here: http://www.myfoxaustin.com/myfox/
