Winds of Change

Fall seems to have arrived here in Wisconsin.
The air is brisk and damp, turning our noses pink and causing us to pull out our socks and sweaters.
The leaves are starting to turn here and there, and the smell of wood smoke has been caught on the wind.

Yesterday I stepped out into the cool air and caught that very particular scent of autumn. I closed my eyes and breathed it in, trying to pull it right into my fingers and heart and commit it to memory.

I love fall. I love all of the seasons and the various rituals they all hold, but fall is my very favorite time. I love the contrast: blue grey sky against the still vibrant trees, cloaked in green, red, yellow and fiery orange, and I am a lover of cozy sweaters and soft, warm socks...going out, getting chilly, and enjoying the end of the outdoor season, so as to better appreciate the sweet warmth of coming back inside.

I look forward to warming stews with crusty breads and candles to stay the darkness of the earlier nights.

There is so much excitement in the air right now. The harlequin in the kitchen is finished and it is so dramatically beautiful, especially with the green striped living room walls.
The bedroom colors had been holding us up. We just couldn't figure out what it needed and were about to prime it all again and start over. So I picked up a silver leafing pen and started to draw on the walls...voila...we had our answer. I can't wait to see it and show it to you!

After days of trying to figure out the hallway scheme, we have finally begun to put it up on the walls and have decided to reserve the opposite wall for a mural.

I haven't painted in many years, but I am feeling so inspired and free and am really looking forward to using the paints my beautiful sister gifted me with.

We're hoping to get started on installing the new floor this week as well. We have finally figured out how to install the stained cork tiles on the floating floor pieces before installing the floating floor...without disrupting the tile pattern. It seemed impossible and we had let go of the idea, but last night I was lying awake in bed and the answer came to me with a little bonus...not only will the floor be easier and faster to install, but it will be more visually interesting and beautiful. More old-fashioned and classic in style, but done in new-school, eco-friendly, sustainable materials.

I think I forgot to mention that all of the work in our home is being done with the environment and our health in mind. Our paints, stains, tile adhesive and sealants are all zero VOC, and our floor tiles are sustainably harvested cork tiles. It feels really good to do this for ourselves and our planet, and the lack of paint fumes is pretty sweet too!

With any luck at all we will be on to ripping out and repairing the furnace, sewing curtains and re-upholstering the sofa and dinette next week.

Our sweet puppy dogs have been hamming it up on my aunt's sheep farm, but we have been missing them terribly and will be bringing them home to us soon.

How's your week looking? I've fixed the comment section so that anyone can comment without an account...so tell me!
Is it fall where you are?

It's not *quite* fall here, yet, but you can sense it approaching. The nights are cold, and require a heavy blanket or quilt, but the days are still hot, as if they're grasping on and trying not to let go of their time of year. :)

What's up in our neck of the woods? We're about to make an offer on a 1790 Colonial home in NH... with 115 acres adjoined, where we plan to build yurts. Yippee! Wish us luck!

It's still summer in Virginia tho you can sense the coming of fall. Our leaves don't change fully til the 2nd or 3rd week of October so we've a way to go. I hate to see the end of summer but once the leaves are down the view of the Blue Ridge is even greater so that combined with cool crisp air makes fall just as wonderful.

I am in Florida and would love to get some cool weather. Living w/out A/C is not easy here. I am a homeschooling mother of 1 and mother of 3 (2 go to school). Just wanted to let you know that I have been enjoying your blog for around 3 months now. Kindness Talithia

Fall is coming on tiptoes here in Switzerland... The air is colder, and leaves seems to hesitate to quit their summers colors...

In Mississippi we had our first fire of the season Saturday morning just before dawn. We drank coffee and watched the sun rise as we dreamed of cooler days as well as nights. Hoping to retire in a month or so. Really looking forward to being at home during the fall and winter holidays. Love your blog and live vicariously through you all. Thanks

The days are still warm but the nights are very cool. There is a tree or two in our neighborhood that has started to change but I think it was due to a lack of rain. I love to walk on the crunchy leaves and smell their wonderful aroma.

Fall is coming to DC. Every other day there is a chill in the air when the sun sets. Fall is probably my favorite time of the year, minus the decreasing sunshine of course.

We've had a a lot of thunderstorms and gray days here in NE NY and in SW Vermont. I saw a little bit of leaf changing on my last rural trip. Nothing here in the city.

I love fall, but I love all four seasons, and tolerate mud season on Vermont's back roads.

Well! The weather is great! Chilly and ready for some chili season! With crackers of course.
Today was beautiful.... The sun was out playing with the cool breeze, and I was engaged with them both while finishing up the landscaping job I have been working on. I am so excited about your home! It looks absolutely amazing! I can't wait to see it. You too! Miss you. Tell the fam I say Hi and I love them.
