I can't choose just one!
--Voyage of the Dawn Treader by CS Lewis. If you haven't read this, READ IT! You'll love it. Voyagers on a ship travel to the end of the world, where they find drinkable light and seas of lilies...
--Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The most beautiful book I've read.
--Postcards by Annie Proulx. The sad and tragic and real life of a lone man in the early to mid part of the 20th century. The kind of book I love because its honest depiction of the solitariness of life breaks your heart. Bittersweet.

READ THEM ALL!

A collection of short stories edited by Nick Hornby - I believe a portion of proceeds from the book go to a school for autism. It's called SPEAKING WITH THE ANGEL. Most specifically Hornby's short story called NippleJesus is one of my favorites - it makes you think about identity, art - and it's funny... plus you can finish it in a longer subway ride. A lot of my favorite authors are also included in there - plus Colin Firth has a story as well - check it out!

I have a lot of favorite books but off the top of my head at this moment, I'm thinking "She's Come Undone" by Wally Lamb.

My Name Is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok. You would really appreciate this book, especially due to your artistic leanings.

The unbearable lightness of being by milan kundera. for the ideas and how it changed my mind about so many things. and for giving me the articulation of 'poetic thought'. Other than that, have you read The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder? My favourite Narnia book is the Silver Chair - where they go north and meet giants and an underground kingdom.....

oh - no, I have changed my mind. A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. AMAZING

I must say my favorite that comes to mind is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster...yes, it's a youth reader but once I became a mom to 3 pre-teenagers, I so rarely was able to find time to read through a monster novel. I found that picking up youth readers gave me the satisfaction of finishing a book...and the upside, it helped me find great books to share with my kids. Half Magic by Edward Eager is definitely a favorite in the family too!
Now that my kids are older, I find more time to read for myself so when I'm not studying text books I look for a good read...I'll have to steal some titles from your reader's suggestions :)

love you!

A Very Small Farm is a recent favorite.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is an old favorite.
100 Years of Solitude is a lasting favorite.
Then there's always The Princess Bride and poetry by Stephen Crane.

I guess my #1 favorite is The Practice of the Presence of God, by one Bro. Lawrence of the Resurrection.

But then, there's The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran.

And everything ever written by Wendell Berry.

It may sound silly, but my favorite book was one given to me by my great aunt on christmas in 1976 when I was 3. It is called "jingle ding and santa" its about a little christmas bell that no one thinks is useful. Now my kids enjoy reading it, especially during the holidays.

That's a hard one. I'd have to say it's probably Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein.

Wow, this is a tough question to answer! I love reading everyone's responses and agree with so many of them. Since I LOVE books and can't choose a favorite I am going to have to go with your criteria and name a few that I have come back to over and over, "comfort books":
100 Years of Solitude (Garcia Marquez)
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
Jitterbug Perfume (Tom Robbins)

P.S. The quote that you posted before from this book made me cry.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls...a true story about her brillant alcoholic father caught up in his self-centered disease, her artistic mother who was not interested in raising her children and how the children learned to take care of themselves...strikes a deep chord.

I know you said one, but these come to mind immediately: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie and A Gift from the Sea, by Ann Morrow Lindbergh... I could go on and on b/c I love good books! Oh, Glass Castle is quite a read -- I've recommended that one to several people.

It's unfortunate that you are receiving a lot of "forgive you mom" type of comments here, especially when her dysfunctional behavior is ongoing. My mother never really changed at all; but I learned how to set myself free of her guilt trips and manipulation. Please try to get a copy of this book: "Toxic Parents" by Dr. Susan Forward. It will help you cope.

"The Norton Anthology of Children's Literature," because it reminds me of my father holding us on his knee and reading story after story, in the time of my childhood that was happy. We all called it "The Big Blue Book." Thanks for the giveaway chance!
