I hacked off my dreads. Yep.
I just woke up one day and it had to be done. Still in my PJs I had a 2 minute Skype conversation with Jeff about it, and was in the bathroom with a pair of kitchen shears before I even had a cup of tea. I expected to be emotional about it. I even expected to deal with some temporary freak-out regret. I had neither. I just lopped them off, tossed them in the trash, and was done with it.
I cut about 6 inches down from my scalp which left an average of 4 inches of dreaded hair to be combed out. I expected this to be difficult and excessively time consuming, and figured that I'd likely not go through with it, so I made an appointment to have it cut into a pixie cut. To my surprise I was able to comb them out without even bothering with conditioner. I might have expected this since I have ridiculously silky hair that doesn't even like to stay in a rubber band. It took me two days to work through them all and I fed myself on a beautiful gem of fanfiction while I worked them.
Having done a bit of reading about combing out dreads I didn't expect the permanent tiny crimp of the previously dreaded hair. Left alone it gives me a pretty serious afro style; surrounding my head like a halo. I've debated cutting it off into a very short cut, but have held off because I want neither the burden of getting it cut every month, nor the hideous hassle that is growing a short cut out.
So, for now I've been wearing it in a twist and no one is the wiser. I actually like the texture when it's down because for the first time in my life I can push my hair off my face and expect it to stay off. I think I'll likely just leave it as it is and let it grow from here.
Hair. Truth is: I hate it. I don't like it short. I don't like to have to style it. I don't like heavy, itchy dreads. I don't like pony tails, bangs, or tangles. I hate to blow- dry, and who's a fan of walking around with wet hair for hours after every shower?
I'd shave it, but alas, I am still a little too vain for that. ;-p
Ah well... it's hat season anyway!

One time my Ethiopian friend did traditional braids in my hair, very tight and tiny things. I left them in as long as possible, but after 3 or 4 days I couldn't stand it anymore. When I took them out I had the best afro ever! Since mine weren't in too long, just washing it made my hair return to normal...
By the way, I love your hair color. And I love having hair to put back, too.
ahhh I long for dreads
still attached to the corporate world for a bit so they will have to wait...
I find hair a problem, too. Mine is naturally curly/wavy and I have spent too much of my life on the losing end of a battle with it. I have worn everything from a pixie cut to waist length but, like you, I dislike bangs, ponytails, braids and so on. I sometimes think of shaving it but I would probably look ridiculous so I just wear it kind of chin length and let it do its thing which varies from day to day.
Actually most people envy my hair because it does curl beautifully - loose curls. I don't know why I am the only one who does not appreciate it but I think we have finally made a tenuous peace, my hair and I.
Hi!
I just had to come out of lurkedom to say: Pictures please!
I'd love to see before and after if possible :)
I had mine cut yesterday, I'm like you can't be bothered with it, shaved in an idea world. I've had a bob...but v.short, and shaved at the back. It feels light and I love the shorn neck. Yes I have a fringe but have finally found local hdresser who will just trim whenever, and so I keep it right out of my eyes...loved my shower this am!! Good luck!
something about the fall. i hacked my hair off into a pixie (it was below shoulder length - and i've always been a short hair person, but was trying to do long) two weeks ago. a friend of mine chopped her dreads too. it's silly that we do this just as the cold months are approaching, but yet fall is such a transitional time that how can you not feel the urge to just...do it?
hair is weird.
Because I can't resist asking - what fandom? :D
(I've wondered occasionally if you were a fannish sort - you just seem the right blend of creative and original and what-else-happened that it seems like a natural fit. :D)
@Cait-
:-) I'm relatively new to the fanart scene, and don't post any of my own, but so far this : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5411384/1/Lily_and_the_HalfBlood_Prince
is my favorite of all time. I LOVED it.
I have a deviantart account, but I mostly collect there.
@Babs - I'd love to see you in dreads. I think they'd suit you well :-) I wish you could make it out here!
@Jennifer I do wish I could have just washed it out, but oh, well. I'm starting to get used to my color. It's only taken a lifetime, but I think I'm past dying and bleaching it now. I swore I would stop when Quinn was born with red hair.
@Chelsea - I totally agree. I like the idea of Samhain being the New Year. It has always felt that way to me.
@Olivia heh. Yep. See previous comment about my hair dying history.
@Mysticpi I thought I posted them, but maybe not. I'll have to go take a look at what I posted...
Rebecca I had a shorn neck bob for a long time and I did really like it as well. It was fairly easy to manage with a scarf and just my fingers. I'll likely go with it again as my hair starts to grow out. I'll try to find pictures... I've had SO many hair styles from David Bowie-esqe funky to sleek angled bobs, waist length and every thing in between. I've dyed it deep brown, black, maroon and platinum blonde.
I feel the exact same way about hair! I hate it, no matter what. It seems useless and a complete waste of time. I hate to be bothered with it! I had been contemplating dreads, but gave up and cut it all off 2 days ago. Still high-maintenance, though. :(
