It's unfortunate that you are receiving a lot of "forgive you mom" type of comments here, especially when her dysfunctional behavior is ongoing. My mother never really changed at all; but I learned how to set myself free of her guilt trips and manipulation. Please try to get a copy of this book: "Toxic Parents" by Dr. Susan Forward. It will help you cope.

I know you said one, but these come to mind immediately: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie and A Gift from the Sea, by Ann Morrow Lindbergh... I could go on and on b/c I love good books! Oh, Glass Castle is quite a read -- I've recommended that one to several people.

Wow, this is a tough question to answer! I love reading everyone's responses and agree with so many of them. Since I LOVE books and can't choose a favorite I am going to have to go with your criteria and name a few that I have come back to over and over, "comfort books":
100 Years of Solitude (Garcia Marquez)
Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)
Jitterbug Perfume (Tom Robbins)

It may sound silly, but my favorite book was one given to me by my great aunt on christmas in 1976 when I was 3. It is called "jingle ding and santa" its about a little christmas bell that no one thinks is useful. Now my kids enjoy reading it, especially during the holidays.

I must say my favorite that comes to mind is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster...yes, it's a youth reader but once I became a mom to 3 pre-teenagers, I so rarely was able to find time to read through a monster novel. I found that picking up youth readers gave me the satisfaction of finishing a book...and the upside, it helped me find great books to share with my kids. Half Magic by Edward Eager is definitely a favorite in the family too!
Now that my kids are older, I find more time to read for myself so when I'm not studying text books I look for a good read...I'll have to steal some titles from your reader's suggestions :)
